Crimea

Crimea

On March 18, 2014, part of the Crimean peninsula officially became part of Russia, forming the Republic of Crimea. The accession of Crimea to Russia did not receive international recognition. On March 27, 2014, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 68/262, in which it was stated that the referendum held is not valid and can not be used as a ground for changing the status of an autonomous republic. In the UN documents and the legislation of Ukraine, the declared territory of the republic is considered as the Autonomous Republic of Crimea temporarily occupied by the Russian armed forces.
We closely monitor the violation of human rights in the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, primarily violations of the rights to freedom of assembly, movement and expression of opinion. Since the entry of the peninsula as a part of Russian Federation, journalists, human rights activists and other activists have recorded many gross violations of the rights of local residents on the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
